Former Olympic Champion Announces Pregnancy
Swiss star Belinda Bencic is retiring from professional tennis at the age of 25 to start a family.
Bencic, who won the gold medal in women's singles at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, announced her retirement on social media on Tuesday. She said that she is expecting her first child with her partner, Martin Hromkovic.
"This decision was not easy, but it is the right one for me and my family," Bencic wrote in a statement. "I have loved every minute of my tennis career, but I am now ready for a new chapter in my life."
Bencic, who has Slovak roots, has been one of the most successful Swiss tennis players in recent years. She has won eight WTA titles, including the 2019 Rogers Cup and the 2021 Charleston Open.
